This is the schedule of the on-going children’s programs at the Northfield Public Library

Mondays 10 –12   First Steps Early Literacy Center
A parent or caregiver-directed activity center where toddlers and preschoolers are surrounded by alphabet manipulatives, concept books, board books and puzzles, all designed to be a fun learning experience.

Tuesdays 10 –11 Patty Cake Infant Lapsit
Infant Lapsit is specially designed to encourage development of language and motor skills by  incorporating books with simple songs, rhymes and fingerplays.   For ages 6-18 months with parent or caregiver.

Wednesdays 10 –11 Toddler Rhyme Time
Is a time to encourage development of language and motor skills by integrating movement, songs, books and rhymes for kids ages 18 months to 3 years old with parent or caregiver.

Thursdays 10 –11 Story Time for 4’s and 5’s

Stories and a craft for the “just about ready for school crowd.” For children who are ready to sit and listen to a picture book, sing songs and create a small art project.

Fridays 10 am to noon   First Steps Early Literacy Center

Saturdays 10 to 11 First Steps Early Literacy Center

Saturdays 11 –12 Carleton Volunteers Story Hour TBA

Summer Reading- it's not over yet!

Northfield kids are reading like crazy this summer! Maybe it’s the rainy, hot and stormy weather. Something is making kids ages pre-school to high school read a lot this summer and I have been thrilled to watch it happen! While it is my job at the library to encourage reading and library skills, this summer’s group of readers has been a bumper crop!

The Teen Advisory Board created the library’s teen summer reading program. TAB members used money they earned from earlier fund-raising events to purchase to e-readers. They offered 2 Nooks as grand prizes and as a result, an average of 50 entry slips were put in the drawing every week. To get an entry slip teens had to read 3 books with 150 pages or more. The summer reading program was 7 weeks long. You do the math - 7 times 50 equals 350, 350 X 3 equals 1050 books! Those kids are so smart!

The younger children filled out a slip for every book they read , or if they were preschool age, they counted books that were read to them. The volunteer Library Pages stapled the slips together every week and no one could believe how long the chains have been!

Before the chains went up we pulled one slip and honored a child as “Reader of the Week.” We hung the slips from the ceiling as a testament to all the books kids read over the summer. Most years these slips have enough room in the children’s area of the library but this year they crossed in front of the circulation desk, around the video area, back behind the circulation desk, and over to the new- items room!

Reward coupons to local merchants were awarded to children who met their reading goals. The Friends of the Library, with some matching donations from the Senior Center’s popcorn wagon, Monkey See, Monkey Read Bookstore and Hogan Brothers gave out over $750 worth of coupons along with other prizes including punch balls, games, cards, cookies and magnet bookmarks.

No matter how you add this up it means Northfield kids did a lot of reading. Children and parents know it’s important to keep up their reading skills over the summer and our official Summer Reading Program is over BUT we are continuing the Reader of the Week drawings, in fact we are expanding it to all ages, so any child can be the “Reader of the Week!”

This week is the end of all the library’s summer reading programs!
All "One World, Many Stories" prizes need to be redeemed by 5:30 on Friday.
We have had about 3 times as many participants as last year so our resources have been stretch to the limit. Please understand if we run out of prizes.

For the TEEN summer reading program "Novel Destinations" all prizes must be picked up soon (the rewards from the basket & book shelf)! If you won one of the weekly drawing prizes please pick them up as soon as possible. We will hold them thru the end of August.
We will have the NOOK drawing at 11 am on Friday, July 28^th! If you win and are not present we WILL hold it for you thru the end of August- or later if you contact us.

Thanks to all the readers who participated but a SPECIAL thanks to the Library Pages who help make it all work, we couldn't do the summer reading program with out them!!!

Come and enjoy Irish and Celtic music with the band InishMohr at Central Park. Wednesday, July 27. Booker, Maria's Taco Hut and the Hawiian Shaved Ice from the Cocoa Bean will all be there and open by 6:30. The music starts at 7 pm.

Books & Stars's 2011 season was made possible with funding from the Myrtle Houston Fund for Children's Programming, the Northfield Public Library and Northfield Schools- Community Services Division. Special thanks to the Northfield Street Department for delivering the showmobile to the events.
In case of inclement weather we will move to the park pavilion at Odd Fellow's Park- the show will go on! Check here or at the library for weather updates.

Xibaba (she-BA-ba) is a band that plays vocal and instrumental music of Brazil for listening and dancing. Selections range from popular bossa novas and sambas to dance music from the Northeastern part of Brazil, to Brazilian jazz (Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moeira, Egberto Gismonte, etc.). Instruments include unique Brazilian instruments such as the pifano (a Brazilian flute), the berimbau ( a single-stringed instrument), pandeiro, ripique, caixa, tambourim, etc. (Brazilian percussion).

The Cocoa Bean will return selling their yummy Hawaiian Ice. Joing them will be Maria's Taco Hut! Now you can enjoy dinner and dessert at Books & Stars. A portion of their sales will be donated to Booker and Children's Programming at the Library!

Bad News- then GOOD NEWS! We didn't get the grant from SEMAC this time around to fund Books & Stars. But the library got a gift 3 years ago for children's programming from Myrtle Houston and we can use the interest off it to cover this year's Books & Stars!

At the Northfield Public Library! Yep, the library! The library's Teen Advisory Board is putting together a super event to help drive away those winter blahs.

On Saturday, February 26 from 6 until 8 pm there will be a 9 hole mini-golf course, laser tag area and assorted video games set up throughout the library.

People of all ages are invited to play. $5 fee per-person or $15 a foursome. This is the only fundraiser the Teen Advisory Board annually sponsors and the funds raised will be used for teen library material purchase, future events, speakers and programs.

There will be a driving range (for prizes) in the meeting room $1 will get you 3 wiffle golf balls to try to hit a prize.

Mini Golf Hole sponsorships are needed! $75 a hole, gets your name on the hole to support the Library Teen Board and their library programs, materials and events. Each of the 9 holes will be unique. With your sponsorship the TAB members will create a theme of your choice. Your name or business will be prominently featured at the hole. Driving Range prizes are also sought if you would like to donate a prize or the funds to purchase a prize. Your name or business will be featured on the prize. Members of TAB are out in the community gathering support.
